First off, why is ventilation so important for skid mounted equipment? Well, a lot of skid mounted systems house machinery that generates heat, fumes, or both. Without proper ventilation, the temperature inside the skid can skyrocket, leading to overheating of components. This can shorten the lifespan of equipment, cause malfunctions, and in the worst – case scenario, even lead to fires.

Let’s start talking about the general ventilation needs. The most basic requirement is to ensure that fresh air can come in and hot or contaminated air can go out. The volume of fresh air needed depends on several factors. One of the main ones is the type of equipment inside the skid.

For skids that house electrical equipment, like transformers or switchgear, the ventilation rate needs to be sufficient to dissipate the heat generated by electrical resistance. These components can get pretty hot, especially when they’re running at full capacity. Usually, engineers calculate the heat output of the equipment (in watts) and then determine the amount of fresh air required to keep the temperature within a safe range. A common rule – of – thumb is that for every kilowatt of heat loss, a certain amount of cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air is needed to cool it down. Roughly speaking, for small – scale electrical skids, a ventilation rate of 10 – 20 CFM per kilowatt of heat load might be a good starting point.

Then there are skids with engines. If your skid has a combustion engine, say for power generation or pumping, things get a bit more complicated. Engines not only produce a lot of heat but also exhaust fumes. These fumes contain pollutants like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, which are not only bad for the environment but also extremely dangerous for anyone in the vicinity if they build up.

The fresh air intake for an engine – powered skid has to be sized to supply enough oxygen for combustion. At the same time, the exhaust system needs to be well – designed to efficiently remove the exhaust gases. A good practice is to ensure that the intake air is clean and free from contaminants that could damage the engine. And when it comes to the exhaust, proper ducting and silencing may be required to meet noise and emission regulations. A general guideline for engine – skid ventilation is to aim for 100 – 200 CFM per horsepower of the engine, but this can vary depending on the engine’s efficiency and operating conditions.

Another factor that affects ventilation requirements is the enclosure design of the skid. If the skid is tightly sealed, like a soundproof enclosure for a generator, the ventilation needs to be carefully balanced. On one hand, you want to keep the noise down, but on the other hand, you can’t allow heat and fumes to build up. In such cases, we might use high – performance fans and a well – thought – out ducting system. The ducts can be designed to draw in fresh air from a clean source and expel the hot or polluted air far away from the skid and any potential human access points.

The location of the skid also matters. If it’s placed in a confined space, like a small indoor room or a container, the ventilation has to be more robust. The air exchange rate needs to be higher to counteract the limited air circulation around the skid. In contrast, if the skid is installed outdoors in an open area, the natural air movement can assist with ventilation to some extent, but we still can’t rely on it completely. Outdoor skids may also face challenges like dust, rain, and snow. So, the ventilation system needs to be designed with appropriate filters and weatherproofing to ensure that the equipment inside stays protected.
